Hello out there !
The Artist Project Art Fair is coming soon. I thought I would share some thoughts and a few previews of my work while I continue to prepare. Closer to the event I will make a page of all work to be shown at my booth.
Note 1: FROZEN and NORTH RIVER
FROZEN 3’x3′ mixed media panel
As said before I create the “environment” of the piece first then let myself “find” what will fit within that space. I have found great material for both these purposes by roaming online through public websites. I like looking for old photos of whatever but have recently gravitated to those of life in Northern Ontario. In particular I have been studying a group of photos taken by John Macfie of Parry Sound who worked for the Ontario Department of Lands and Forests in the most northerly part of Ontario the Patricia District in the 1950’s. I have also read his personal diary of his experiences working as a trapline manager with the native populations throughout the area. It is hard to describe why but his account has made a strong impression therefore I contacted John. He has graciously given me permission to draw from his photos. He has also been very helpful answering my questions. I send him jpgs of the work as I go to see what he thinks – he offers praise but makes no specific comment thereby leaving me free to follow my own direction. The relationship is special – informing my process in new ways I have yet to really articulate.
NORTH RIVER 3’x3′ mixed media panel
In this case the photo is much older 1905 taken by Charles Macnamara. The Macnamara photos are a little more mysterious as they are after all more than 100 years old. As with John Macfie’s photos it is the graphical look of them that has attracted me. The photos have changed with age and thus have an interface that obscures perhaps much of what they once were. In drawing from them however it seemed that I was in touch a little with their story.
Finally here is my invitation to the fair – I welcome your visit if possible and your comments too as always.
THE TYPE ARTIST COMPETITION
The Type Artist Competition is a popular feature of the TAP art fair. This year’s theme “TYPE” gives everyone an opportunity to do a piece outside their current art practice and join in a group show inside the whole art fair exhibit. It consequently provides the viewers another perspective on the artists they are seeing the fair: all the artists are giving their unique thoughts on a common theme. The tone is light hearted and enjoyable.
Type may seem to be a quaint old thing but really still informs our lives ubiquitously. Take computer code for a website: it is a series of letters, numbers and other symbols. I am not a web designer by any measure but have stumbled on the code version of enough websites and pages to learn that such code underlies all that we see on the internet. Type then is everywhere.
Such is my “blurb” for my submission that you see above.
“TYPE IMAGE” is a paper-cut and digital print on paper, framed, 13″x 13″
Of course there is also a panel of jurors who will be handing out cash prizes !! Who knows, I might get lucky !!!
The fair is literally thirty days away…. of course I am busy with it but shall be on here again in a few days,
Hello Everyone and Happy New Year !!!
I am a Participating Artist in THE ARTIST PROJECT Art Fair Feb 19 to 22 at the Better Living Centre, Exhibition Place in Toronto. Lots to do before the fair but I will be posting as the clock keeps ticking down to show time (it is not that far away !!).
I am happy to bring you the latest update from TAP:
** Every year, we select “10 works $500 and Under” to promote Artist Project as a fun and accessible place for people to start or add to their art collections. These works and artists are featured in our Show Guide – 100,000 distributed via Globe & Mail and 10,000 distributed onsite – and other 2015 marketing materials. This is also an excellent way to get noticed by visitors and the media — and hopefully boost your sales!
I have submitted work for this promotion. Please wish me luck in being selected !!
Here are the artworks that I have submitted so you can have a look.
Each is a mixed media on canvas panel, 16″ x 16″ and priced at $485.00 unframed.
